requirements for membership in naap

There are several levels of individual professional membership in NAAP, plus categories for organizations, research affiliates and friends. Click on the category for information on requirements:


A Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist must satisfy the following criteria:

  • Accredited Master's degree.
  • Graduation from an ABAP-accredited psychoanalytic psychotherapy training institute or equivalent institute or program and completion at that institute of a minimum of three years of training, consisting of a minimum of 36 credit hours (Carnegie Units) of seminars on theory and technique.
  • Minimum of 200 hours of personal psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
  • Minimum of 100 hours of psychoanalytic psychotherapy case supervision, 50 hours with one supervisor, and 50 hours with one or more other supervisors, all supervisors to be someone other than one's personal psychoanalytic psychotherapist.
  • Minimum of 300 hours of supervised clinical experience.
  • All psychoanalytic psychotherapy and supervisory work is required to be with certified psychoanalytic psychotherapists. All applicants will be registered with NAAP according to their institute certification.
